My enemies are like a mighty flood. Reach down from heaven and save me. Save me from outsiders who attack me.

God, save me. My troubles are like a flood. I’m up to my neck in them.I’m sinking in deep mud. I have no firm place to stand. I am out in deep water. The waves roll over me.

You had Jesus killed by nailing him to a cross. But the God of our people raised Jesus from the dead.Now Jesus is Prince and Savior. God has proved this by giving Jesus a place of honor with him. He did it to turn Israel away from their sins and forgive them.

You have sent wave upon wave of trouble over me. It roars down on me like a waterfall. All your waves and breakers have rolled over me.

“ My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,” he said to them.“ Stay here. Keep watch.”He went a little farther. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him.“ Abba, Father,” he said,“ everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.“ Simon,” he said to Peter,“ are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing.Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.Jesus returned the third time. He said to them,“ Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners.Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!”

So they took Jeremiah and put him into an empty well. It belonged to Malkijah. He was a member of the royal court. His well was in the courtyard of the guard. Zedekiah’s men lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the well. It didn’t have any water in it. All it had was mud. And Jeremiah sank down into the mud.Ebed- Melek was an official in the royal palace. He was from the land of Cush. He heard that Jeremiah had been put into the well. The king was sitting by the Benjamin Gate at that time.Ebed- Melek went out of the palace. He said to the king,“ My king and master, everything these men have done to Jeremiah the prophet is evil. They have thrown him into an empty well. Soon there won’t be any more bread in the city. Then he’ll starve to death.”So the king gave an order to Ebed- Melek the Cushite. He said,“ Take with you 30 men from here. Lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the well before he dies.”Then Ebed- Melek took the men with him. He went to a room in the palace. It was under the place where the treasures were stored. He got some old rags and worn- out clothes from there. Then he let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the well.Ebed- Melek the Cushite told Jeremiah what to do. Ebed- Melek said,“ Put these old rags and worn- out clothes under your arms. They’ll pad the ropes.” So Jeremiah did.Then the men pulled him up with the ropes. They lifted him out of the well. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

They gather all around me with their words of hatred. They attack me without any reason.

I am thirsty for God. I am thirsty for the living God. When can I go and meet with him?

Don’t let those who are my enemies without any reason laugh at me and make fun of me. Don’t let those who hate me without any reason wink at me with an evil purpose.

They would have been like a flood that drowned us. They would have swept over us like a rushing river.They would have washed us away like a swollen stream.

I was patient while I waited for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry for help.I was sliding down into the pit of death, and he pulled me out. He brought me up out of the mud and dirt. He set my feet on a rock. He gave me a firm place to stand on.He gave me a new song to sing. It is a hymn of praise to our God. Many people will see and have respect for the Lord. They will put their trust in him.

Don’t let the floods cover me. Don’t let the deep water swallow me up. Don’t let the grave close its mouth over me.

Lord, I called out to you. I called out from the bottom of the pit.

But Lord and King, help me so that you bring honor to yourself. Because your love is so good, save me.

“ But those he ruled over hated him. They sent some messengers after him. They were sent to say,‘ We don’t want this man to be our king.’

Look at how I’m hurting! See how much I suffer! Take away all my sins.Look at how many enemies I have! See how terrible their hatred is for me!

And what about my enemies who did not want me to be king over them? Bring them here! Kill them in front of me!’ ”

At three o’clock in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice,“ Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” This means“ My God, my God, why have you deserted me?”( Psalm 22:1)
