“看哪，这个人不把神当作自己的保障，他依靠自己丰盛的财富，靠自己的奸恶得胜。”

曰、試觀斯人、不以上帝為力、惟恃多財、以惡自固兮、

曰、彼其之子、輕上帝之能力、恃一己之貨財、強悍作惡兮、

云、不仰賴天主保護、惟恃己之多財、盡力作惡者、即是此人、

誰知天網恢恢兮。將滅爾以終古。逐爾於家室之外兮。除爾於永生之圃。

“ Just look at this fellow! He didn’t depend on God for his safety. He put his trust in all his wealth. He grew strong by destroying others!”

“ See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!”

“ Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.”

The merchant uses dishonest scales and loves to defraud.Ephraim boasts,“ I am very rich; I have become wealthy. With all my wealth they will not find in me any iniquity or sin.”

This is what the Lord says:“ Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.

Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.

As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them,“ Here is the man!”

those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them—the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough—so that they should live on forever and not see decay.For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others.Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish.This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings.They are like sheep and are destined to die; death will be their shepherd( but the upright will prevail over them in the morning). Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions.But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases;for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them.Though while they live they count themselves blessed— and people praise you when you prosper—they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life.People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath.Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate:“ Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble,the man who made the world a wilderness, who overthrew its cities and would not let his captives go home?”

From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.They say,“ How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.
