Men are only a vapor; exalted men, an illusion. Weighed in the scales, they go up; together they are less than a vapor.

My brothers, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.For example, a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in.If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say,“ Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man,“ Stand over there,” or,“ Sit here on the floor by my footstool,”haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He has promised to those who love Him?Yet you dishonored that poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?Don’t they blaspheme the noble name that was pronounced over you at your baptism?

Then I thought: They are just the poor; they have played the fool. For they don’t understand the way of the Lord, the justice of their God.I will go to the powerful and speak to them. Surely they know the way of the Lord, the justice of their God. However, these also had broken the yoke and torn off the chains.

Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the military commanders, the rich, the powerful, and every slave and free person hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.And they said to the mountains and to the rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb,because the great day of Their wrath has come! And who is able to stand?”

The Lord brings poverty and gives wealth; He humbles and He exalts.He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the garbage pile. He seats them with noblemen and gives them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; He has set the world on them.

God is not partial to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of His hands.

The brother of humble circumstances should boast in his exaltation,but the one who is rich should boast in his humiliation because he will pass away like a flower of the field.For the sun rises with its scorching heat and dries up the grass; its flower falls off, and its beautiful appearance is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will wither away while pursuing his activities.

The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord made them both.
