当夜，耶和华的使者出去，在亚述营中杀了十八万五千人。清早有人起来，看哪，都是死尸。亚述王西拿基立就拔营回去，住在尼尼微。一日，他在他的神明尼斯洛庙里叩拜，他儿子亚得米勒和沙利色用刀杀了他，然后逃到亚拉腊地；他儿子以撒‧哈顿接续他作王。

因为主使亚兰人的军队听见战车战马的声音，大军的声音，他们就彼此说：“看哪，这必是以色列王雇用赫人诸王和埃及诸王来攻击我们。”所以，在黄昏的时候他们起来逃跑，撇下帐棚、马、驴，把军营留在原处，只顾逃命。

他使他们的车轮脱落，难以前行，埃及人说：“我们从以色列人面前逃跑吧！因耶和华为他们作战，攻击埃及了。”
