Lord, what can I say now that Israel has fled from its enemies?

I will turn against you, and you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will run even when no one is chasing you!

Everyone who comes along has robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors.

That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction.

“ The Lord will cause you to be defeated by your enemies. You will attack your enemies from one direction, but you will scatter from them in seven! You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they killed three of his sons— Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malkishua.The fighting grew very fierce around Saul, and the Philistine archers caught up with him and wounded him severely.Saul groaned to his armor bearer,“ Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to run me through and taunt and torture me.” But his armor bearer was afraid and would not do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.When his armor bearer realized that Saul was dead, he fell on his own sword and died beside the king.So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and his troops all died together that same day.When the Israelites on the other side of the Jezreel Valley and beyond the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. So the Philistines moved in and occupied their towns.

I have robbed their nests of riches and gathered up kingdoms as a farmer gathers eggs. No one can even flap a wing against me or utter a peep of protest.”

“ Israel has been defeated by the Philistines,” the messenger replied.“ The people have been slaughtered, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were also killed. And the Ark of God has been captured.”

When I speak, the words burst out.“ Violence and destruction!” I shout. So these messages from the Lord have made me a household joke.
