When I remember what has happened, I tell God all my troubles. I remember how I used to walk to the house of God. The Mighty One guarded my steps. We shouted with joy and praised God as we went along with the joyful crowd.

These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!

I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts.

“ Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied,“ I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”

They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God.After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman.He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to extol, thank, and praise the Lord, the God of Israel:Asaph was the chief, and next to him in rank were Zechariah, then Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed- Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals,and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.That day David first appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise to the Lord in this manner:Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,you his servants, the descendants of Israel, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations,the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac.He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant:“ To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.”When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it,they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings:“ Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.”Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.Tremble before him, all the earth! Then all the people said“ Amen” and“ Praise the Lord.”David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister there regularly, according to each day’s requirements.He also left Obed-Edom and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were gatekeepers.David left Zadok the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place in Gibeonto present burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law of the Lord, which he had given Israel.With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the Lord,“ for his love endures forever.”Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were stationed at the gate.Then all the people left, each for their own home, and David returned home to bless his family.

Be joyful at your festival— you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns.For seven days celebrate the festival to the Lord your God at the place the Lord will choose. For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.

On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their homes, joyful and glad in heart for the good things the Lord had done for David and Solomon and for his people Israel.

“ How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me,when his lamp shone on my head and by his light I walked through darkness!Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house,when the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me,when my path was drenched with cream and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil.“ When I went to the gate of the city and took my seat in the public square,the young men saw me and stepped aside and the old men rose to their feet;the chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;the voices of the nobles were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me,because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.The one who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing.I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.“ I thought,‘ I will die in my own house, my days as numerous as the grains of sand.My roots will reach to the water, and the dew will lie all night on my branches.My glory will not fade; the bow will be ever new in my hand.’“ People listened to me expectantly, waiting in silence for my counsel.After I had spoken, they spoke no more; my words fell gently on their ears.They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain.When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them.I chose the way for them and sat as their chief; I dwelt as a king among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners.“ But now they mock me, men younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs.Of what use was the strength of their hands to me, since their vigor had gone from them?Haggard from want and hunger, they roamed the parched land in desolate wastelands at night.In the brush they gathered salt herbs, and their food was the root of the broom bush.They were banished from human society, shouted at as if they were thieves.They were forced to live in the dry stream beds, among the rocks and in holes in the ground.They brayed among the bushes and huddled in the undergrowth.A base and nameless brood, they were driven out of the land.“ And now those young men mock me in song; I have become a byword among them.They detest me and keep their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.Now that God has unstrung my bow and afflicted me, they throw off restraint in my presence.On my right the tribe attacks; they lay snares for my feet, they build their siege ramps against me.They break up my road; they succeed in destroying me.‘ No one can help him,’ they say.They advance as through a gaping breach; amid the ruins they come rolling in.Terrors overwhelm me; my dignity is driven away as by the wind, my safety vanishes like a cloud.“ And now my life ebbs away; days of suffering grip me.Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never rest.In his great power God becomes like clothing to me; he binds me like the neck of my garment.He throws me into the mud, and I am reduced to dust and ashes.“ I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer; I stand up, but you merely look at me.You turn on me ruthlessly; with the might of your hand you attack me.You snatch me up and drive me before the wind; you toss me about in the storm.I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living.“ Surely no one lays a hand on a broken man when he cries for help in his distress.Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the poor?Yet when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, then came darkness.The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me.I go about blackened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help.I have become a brother of jackals, a companion of owls.My skin grows black and peels; my body burns with fever.My lyre is tuned to mourning, and my pipe to the sound of wailing.

Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.

How the gold has lost its luster, the fine gold become dull! The sacred gems are scattered at every street corner.

I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.”

Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre.Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;

And rejoice before the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name— you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, the Levites in your towns, and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows living among you.

And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph son of Berekiah; and from their relatives the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah;and with them their relatives next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel, the gatekeepers.The musicians Heman, Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals;Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth,and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith.Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark.Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing.Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed.Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod.So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.

Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at every street corner.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.

“ But Abraham replied,‘ Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

The whole assembly then agreed to celebrate the festival seven more days; so for another seven days they celebrated joyfully.Hezekiah king of Judah provided a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep and goats for the assembly, and the officials provided them with a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep and goats. A great number of priests consecrated themselves.The entire assembly of Judah rejoiced, along with the priests and Levites and all who had assembled from Israel, including the foreigners who had come from Israel and also those who resided in Judah.There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem.
