These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.

When I remember what has happened, I tell God all my troubles. I remember how I used to walk to the house of God. The Mighty One guarded my steps. We shouted with joy and praised God as we went along with the joyful crowd.

These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!

I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts.

I was glad when they said to me,“ Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”

But Hannah answered and said,“ No, my lord, I am a woman despairing in spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the Lord.Do not consider your bond servant a useless woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great concern and provocation.”

Then all the people said,“ Amen,” and praised the Lord.So he left Asaph and his relatives there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required,and Obed edom with his sixty eight relatives; Obed edom, the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah as gatekeepers.He left Zadok the priest and his relatives the priests before the tabernacle of the Lord in the high place which was at Gibeon,to offer burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, even according to everything that is written in the Law of the Lord, which He commanded Israel.With them were Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to give thanks to the Lord, because His kindness is everlasting.And with them were Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those who were to play them, and with instruments for the songs of God, and the sons of Jeduthun for the gate.Then all the people departed, each to his house; and David returned to bless his household.

and you shall rejoice in your feast, you, your son and your daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow who are in your towns.For seven days you shall celebrate a feast to the Lord your God in the place which the Lord chooses, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful.

Then on the twenty third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their tents, rejoicing and happy in heart because of the goodness that the Lord had shown to David, to Solomon, and to His people Israel.

“ Oh that I were as in months gone by, As in the days when God watched over me;When His lamp shone over my head, And by His light I walked through darkness;Just as I was in the days of my youth, When the protection of God was over my tent;When the Almighty was still with me, And my children were around me;When my steps were bathed in cream, And the rock poured out streams of oil for me!When I went out to the gate of the city, When I took my seat in the public square,The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the old men arose and stood.The leaders stopped talking And put their hands on their mouths;The voices of the prominent people were hushed, And their tongues stuck to their palates.For when an ear heard, it called me blessed, And when an eye saw, it testified in support of me,Because I saved the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.The blessing of the one who was about to perish came upon me, And I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a headband.I was eyes to those who were blind, And feet to those who could not walk.I was a father to the poor, And I investigated the case which I did not know.I broke the jaws of the wicked And rescued the prey from his teeth.Then I thought,‘ I will die with my family, And I will multiply my days as the sand.My root is spread out to the waters, And dew lies on my branch all night.My glory is ever new with me, And my bow is renewed in my hand.’“ To me they listened and waited, And they kept silent for my advice.After my words they did not speak again, And my speech dropped on them.They waited for me as for the rain, And opened their mouths as for the late rain.I smiled at them when they did not believe, And they did not look at my kindness ungraciously.I chose a way for them and sat as chief, And lived as a king among the troops, As one who comforted the mourners.“ But now those who are younger than I mock me, Whose fathers I refused to put with the dogs of my flock.Indeed, what good was the strength of their hands to me? Vigor had perished from them.From poverty and famine they are gaunt, They who gnaw at the dry ground by night in waste and desolation,Who pluck saltweed by the bushes, And whose food is the root of the broom shrub.They are driven from the community; They shout against them as against a thief,So that they live on the slopes of ravines, In holes in the ground and among the rocks.Among the bushes they cry out; Under the weeds they are gathered together.Worthless fellows, even those without a name, They were cast out from the land.“ And now I have become their taunt, And I have become a byword to them.They loathe me and stand aloof from me, And they do not refrain from spitting in my face.Because He has undone my bowstring and afflicted me, They have cast off the bridle before me.On the right hand their mob arises; They push aside my feet and pile up their ways of destruction against me.They break up my path, They promote my destruction; No one restrains them.As through a wide gap they come, Amid the storm they roll on.Sudden terrors are turned upon me; They chase away my dignity like the wind, And my prosperity has passed away like a cloud.“ And now my soul is poured out within me; Days of misery have seized me.At night it pierces my bones within me, And my gnawing pains do not rest.By a great force my garment is distorted; It ties me up like the collar of my coat.He has thrown me into the mire, And I have become like dust and ashes.I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer me; I stand up, and You turn Your attention against me.You have become cruel to me; With the strength of Your hand You persecute me.You lift me up to the wind and make me ride it; And You dissolve me in a storm.For I know that You will bring me to death, And to the house of meeting for all living.“ Yet does one in a heap of ruins not reach out with his hand, Or in his disaster does he not cry out for help?Have I not wept for the one whose life is hard? Was my soul not grieved for the needy?When I expected good, evil came; When I waited for light, darkness came.I am seething within and cannot rest; Days of misery confront me.I go about mourning without comfort; I stand up in the assembly and cry out for help.I have become a brother to jackals, And a companion of ostriches.My skin turns black on me, And my bones burn with fever.Therefore my harp is turned to mourning, And my flute to the sound of those who weep.

Behold, on the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, Judah, Pay your vows. For never again will the wicked one pass through you; He is eliminated completely.

How dark the gold has become, How the pure gold has changed! The sacred stones are spilled out At the corner of every street.

I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

Sing for joy to God our strength; Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.Raise a song, strike the tambourine, The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.Blow the trumpet at the new moon, At the full moon, on our feast day.

and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you, your son and your daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the Levite who is in your town, and the stranger, the orphan, and the widow who are in your midst, at the place where the Lord your God chooses to establish His name.

The sons of the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles on them, just as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.Then David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their relatives as the singers, with musical instruments, harps, lyres, and cymbals, playing to raise sounds of joy.So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel, and from his relatives, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and from the sons of Merari their relatives, Ethan the son of Kushaiah,and with them their relatives of the second rank, Zechariah, Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers.So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound aloud cymbals of bronze;and Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with harps tuned to alamoth;and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, to lead with lyres tuned to the sheminith.Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was in charge of the singing; he gave instruction in singing because he was skillful.Berechiah and Elkanah were gatekeepers for the ark.Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, blew the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed edom and Jehiah also were gatekeepers for the ark.So it was David, with the elders of Israel and the captains of thousands, who went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed edom with joy.Because God was helping the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen with all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the leader of the singing with the singers. David also wore an ephod of linen.So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the horn, with trumpets, with loud sounding cymbals, with harps, and lyres.

Arise, whimper in the night At the beginning of the night watches; Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord; Raise your hands to Him For the life of your little ones Who languish because of hunger At the head of every street.

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courtyards with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.

We who had sweet fellowship together, Walked in the house of God among the commotion.

But Abraham said,‘ Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.

Then the whole assembly decided to celebrate the feast another seven days, so they celebrated the seven days with joy.For Hezekiah king of Judah had contributed to the assembly a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep, and the princes had contributed to the assembly a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep; and a large number of priests consecrated themselves.All the assembly of Judah rejoiced, with the priests and the Levites and all the assembly that came from Israel, both the strangers who came from the land of Israel and those living in Judah.So there was great joy in Jerusalem, because there was nothing like this in Jerusalem since the days of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel.
