Their mouths speak words that are evil and false. They do not act wisely or do what is good.

those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of him.”

Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.

One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath:“ As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.

But Samuel said to him,“ I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”

Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with malice. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongues they tell lies.

“ I will give her to him,” he thought,“ so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David,“ Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.”

But those who turn to crooked ways the Lord will banish with the evildoers. Peace be on Israel.

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said,“ You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?

But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Then Saul said,“ I have sinned. Come back, David my son. Because you considered my life precious today, I will not try to harm you again. Surely I have acted like a fool and have been terribly wrong.”

Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

“ You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said.“ You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s; the poison of vipers is on their lips.

When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger.He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming,“ This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one.When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.They told the messengers who had come,“ Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead,‘ By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated.They said to the Ammonites,“ Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.The people then said to Samuel,“ Who was it that asked,‘ Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.”But Saul said,“ No one will be put to death today, for this day the Lord has rescued Israel.”
