In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin.

They praise themselves so much that they can’t see their sin or hate it.

For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

For with his flattering opinion of himself, he does not discover and hate his iniquity.

For it flatters him in his own eyes Concerning the discovery of his wrongful deed and the hatred of it.

For he flatters himself in his own eyes, When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates.

For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, That his iniquity will not be found out and be hated.

for in his own eyes he flatters himself too much to discover and hate his sin.

For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

for he is too proud to recognize and give up his sin.

In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success.

“ Those who hear the warnings of this curse should not congratulate themselves, thinking,‘ I am safe, even though I am following the desires of my own stubborn heart.’ This would lead to utter ruin!

For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the Lord.

Well then, should we conclude that we Jews are better than others? No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people, whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the power of sin.

At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life,

“ You say,‘ That’s not true! I haven’t worshiped the images of Baal!’ But how can you say that? Go and look in any valley in the land! Face the awful sins you have done. You are like a restless female camel desperately searching for a mate.

Your clothing is stained with the blood of the innocent and the poor, though you didn’t catch them breaking into your houses!And yet you say,‘ I have done nothing wrong. Surely God isn’t angry with me!’ But now I will punish you severely because you claim you have not sinned.

And the Lord sent you on a mission and told you,‘ Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, until they are all dead.’Why haven’t you obeyed the Lord? Why did you rush for the plunder and do what was evil in the Lord’s sight?”“ But I did obey the Lord,” Saul insisted.“ I carried out the mission he gave me. I brought back King Agag, but I destroyed everyone else.Then my troops brought in the best of the sheep, goats, cattle, and plunder to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”But Samuel replied,“ What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”Then Saul admitted to Samuel,“ Yes, I have sinned. I have disobeyed your instructions and the Lord’s command, for I was afraid of the people and did what they demanded.

The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at him.Then he said to them,“ You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.

“ The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?

But no, the people are like crafty merchants selling from dishonest scales— they love to cheat.Israel boasts,“ I am rich! I’ve made a fortune all by myself! No one has caught me cheating! My record is spotless!”

So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a mediuminstead of asking the Lord for guidance. So the Lord killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law.
