Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,

But when they were sick, I put on the clothing of sadness. I made myself humble by going without food. My prayers for them weren’t always answered.

But I, when they were sick— I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest.

Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered.

If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you.

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.

When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite:“ Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”

It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance.

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’“ Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”Jesus answered,“ How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
