Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,

If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace.

When I wept in my soul with fasting, It became my disgrace.When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a proverb to them.

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

And if a man of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you.

Yet it came about, when Ahab heard these words, that he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and fasted, and he lay in sackcloth and went about despondently.Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,“ Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; I will bring the disaster upon his house in his son’s days.”

It is to be a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, so that you may humble yourselves; it is a permanent statute.

‘ Why have we fasted and You do not see? Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?’ Behold, on the day of your fast you find your desire, And oppress all your workers.

Is it a fast like this that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it for bowing one’s head like a reed And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed? Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the Lord?

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ The attendants of the groom cannot mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

“ This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble yourselves and not do any work, whether the native, or the stranger who resides among you;
