Then a champion came forward from the army encampment of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath. His height was six cubits and a span.

And he said,“ Behold, I had a dream; a loaf of barley bread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came to the tent and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down so that the tent collapsed.”And his friend replied,“ This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has handed over to him Midian and all the camp.”When Gideon heard the account of the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. Then he returned to the camp of Israel and said,“ Arise, for the Lord has handed over to you the camp of Midian!”And he divided the three hundred men into three units, and he put trumpets and empty pitchers into the hands of all of them, with torches inside the pitchers.Then he said to them,“ Look at me and do likewise. And behold, when I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do.When I and all who are with me blow the trumpet, then you also blow the trumpets around the entire camp and say,‘ For the Lord and for Gideon!’ ”So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle night watch, when they had just posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and smashed the pitchers that were in their hands.When the three units blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers, they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing, and shouted,“ A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”And each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran, crying out as they fled.And when they blew the three hundred trumpets, the Lord set the sword of one against another even throughout the entire army; and the army fled as far as Beth shittah toward Zererah, as far as the edge of Abel meholah, by Tabbath.And the men of Israel were summoned from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.Then Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying,“ Come down against Midian and take control of the waters ahead of them, as far as Beth barah and the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were summoned, and they took control of the waters as far as Beth barah and the Jordan.And they captured the two leaders of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and they killed Zeeb at the wine press of Zeeb, while they pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon from across the Jordan.

And the sons of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went to meet them; and the sons of Israel camped opposite them like two little flocks of goats, while the Arameans filled the country.Then a man of God approached and spoke to the king of Israel, and said,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ Since the Arameans have said,“ The Lord is a god of mountains, but He is not a god of valleys,” therefore I will hand over to you all this great multitude, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”So they camped, one opposite the other, for seven days. And on the seventh day the battle was joined, and the sons of Israel killed of the Arameans a hundred thousand foot soldiers in a single day.

And the Lord sent an angel who destroyed every warrior, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him there with the sword.

Ben hadad sent word to him and said,“ May the gods do so to me and more so, if the dust of Samaria will be enough for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”

And the Lord said to Gideon,“ The people who are with you are too many for Me to hand Midian over to them, otherwise Israel would become boastful, saying,‘ My own power has saved me.’

Now Zerah the Ethiopian went out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.So Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up in battle formation in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said,“ Lord, there is no one besides You to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength; help us, Lord our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name have come against this multitude. Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You.”So the Lord routed the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar; and so many Ethiopians fell that they could not recover, for they were shattered before the Lord and before His army. And they carried away a very large amount of plunder.

Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”

Now then, give me this hill country about which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that Anakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I will drive them out just as the Lord has spoken.”

The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, Pharaoh’s entire army that had gone into the sea after them; not even one of them remained.

For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me.But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us.

But David said to the Philistine,“ You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a saber, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you and remove your head from you. Then I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,and that this entire assembly may know that the Lord does not save by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will hand you over to us!”Then it happened, when the Philistine came closer to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone penetrated his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

With him is only an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people relied on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem while he was besieging Lachish with all his forces with him, against Hezekiah king of Judah and against all of Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,
