The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.

See how these enemies insult you, Lord. A foolish nation has dishonored your name.

About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church.He had the apostle James( John’s brother) killed with a sword.When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish people, he also arrested Peter.( This took place during the Passover celebration.)Then he imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover.But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.The night before Peter was to be placed on trial, he was asleep, fastened with two chains between two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate.

And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

The Lord stands at your right hand to protect you. He will strike down many kings when his anger erupts.

At that time some Pharisees said to him,“ Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”

No human wisdom or understanding or plan can stand against the Lord.

Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth!

Don’t overlook what your enemies have said or their growing uproar.

Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.

The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.They brought in the two disciples and demanded,“ By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,“ Rulers and elders of our people,

In the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaints, which are against him, not against us. What have we done that you should complain about us?”

For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit.

At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest,

He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,“ Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?”
