Now the chief priests and the entire Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.

He first* found his own brother Simon and* said to him,“ We have found the Messiah”( which translated means Christ).

And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.And so Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.

Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church, to do them harm.And he had James the brother of John executed with a sword.When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter as well.( Now these were the days of Unleavened Bread.)When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, turning him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending only after the Passover to bring him before the people.So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made to God intensely by the church.On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison.

You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath.

At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him,“ Go away and leave this place, because Herod wants to kill You.”

There is no wisdom, no understanding, And no plan against the Lord.

Now then, you kings, use insight; Let yourselves be instructed, you judges of the earth.

Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries, The uproar of those who rise against You, which ascends continually.

Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent men and killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high priestly descent.When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire,“ By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,“ Rulers and elders of the people,

and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, for He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and what are we, that you grumble against us?”

For He whom God sent speaks the words of God; for He does not give the Spirit sparingly.

At that time the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the courtyard of the high priest named Caiaphas;

and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,“ Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
