悲我身之遭厄兮。求恩主之矜憐。竟脫我於虎口兮。信慈惠之無邊。

The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.

The ropes of death were almost wrapped around me. A destroying flood swept over me.

Death wrapped its ropes around me; the terrors of the grave overtook me. I saw only trouble and sorrow.

In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying,“ I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!”And all the people yelled back,“ We will take responsibility for his death— we and our children!”

“ The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me.The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path.

He said,“ I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves.Then I said,‘ O Lord, you have driven me from your presence. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.’“ I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head.I sank down to the very roots of the mountains. I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, snatched me from the jaws of death!As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple.

My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey.

My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet.

And even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests and elders of the people.

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!

and people are terrified. Pangs of anguish grip them, like those of a woman in labor. They look helplessly at one another, their faces aflame with fear.

The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us.

He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.He told them,“ My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.“ Look at you now!” they yelled at him.“ You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus.“ He saved others,” they scoffed,“ but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him!He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”Even the revolutionaries who were crucified with him ridiculed him in the same way.

The whole city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him.

Then Jesus said to the crowd,“ Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day.

He told them,“ My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying,“ My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
