Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court.For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.

For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian.

Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors.

The Lord replies,“ I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.

The eyes of all look to you in hope; you give them their food as they need it.When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.

Don’t cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers; don’t take the land of defenseless orphans.For their Redeemer is strong; he himself will bring their charges against you.

But you see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in you. You defend the orphans.Break the arms of these wicked, evil people! Go after them until the last one is destroyed.

He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.

He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains.Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron.

The priests will enjoy abundance, and my people will feast on my good gifts. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

He gives food to every living thing. His faithful love endures forever.

“ At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,

Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!
