So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.Then they asked Him, saying,“ Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them,“ Why do you test Me?

Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, And from the traps of the workers of iniquity.Let the wicked fall into their own nets, While I escape safely.

Shall evil be repaid for good? For they have dug a pit for my life. Remember that I stood before You To speak good for them, To turn away Your wrath from them.

The proud have dug pits for me, Which is not according to Your law.

Let not the foot of pride come against me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.Our soul is exceedingly filled With the scorn of those who are at ease, With the contempt of the proud.

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things,lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,From the wicked who oppress me, From my deadly enemies who surround me.They have closed up their fat hearts; With their mouths they speak proudly.They have now surrounded us in our steps; They have set their eyes, crouching down to the earth,As a lion is eager to tear his prey, And like a young lion lurking in secret places.Arise, O Lord, Confront him, cast him down; Deliver my life from the wicked with Your sword,

Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength.

The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him.

The proud have forged a lie against me, But I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart.

The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.His ways are always prospering; Your judgments are far above, out of his sight; As for all his enemies, he sneers at them.He has said in his heart,“ I shall not be moved; I shall never be in adversity.”His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity.He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the secret places he murders the innocent; His eyes are secretly fixed on the helpless.He lies in wait secretly, as a lion in his den; He lies in wait to catch the poor; He catches the poor when he draws him into his net.So he crouches, he lies low, That the helpless may fall by his strength.He has said in his heart,“ God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see.”Arise, O Lord! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble.

A man who flatters his neighbor Spreads a net for his feet.

Then they said,“ Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come and let us attack him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.”

The wicked have laid a snare for me, Yet I have not strayed from Your precepts.
