Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil— the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

Only a simpleton would not know, and only a fool would not understand this:

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies.They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other.And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.

The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.

You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.

Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.

“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope.

“ How long, you simpletons, will you insist on being simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?

For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.

It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.

Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other.

And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.

You cannot separate fools from their foolishness, even though you grind them like grain with mortar and pestle.

I know Nabal is a wicked and ill tempered man; please don’t pay any attention to him. He is a fool, just as his name suggests. But I never even saw the young men you sent.

Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins.

Oh, what a sinful nation they are— loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.

“ But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars— their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

How much less pure is a corrupt and sinful person with a thirst for wickedness!

But you reply,‘ That’s why God can’t see what I am doing! How can he judge through the thick darkness?

For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.

How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast?They crush your people, Lord, hurting those you claim as your own.They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans.“ The Lord isn’t looking,” they say,“ and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.”Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on?

Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all.In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are.Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good.They lie awake at night, hatching sinful plots. Their actions are never good. They make no attempt to turn from evil.

Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? Don’t you realize God’s justice continues forever?All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you’re an expert at telling lies.You love evil more than good and lies more than truth. InterludeYou love to destroy others with your words, you liar!But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. InterludeThe righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say,
