By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion.

We were sitting by the rivers of Babylon. We wept when we remembered what had happened to Zion.

Beside the rivers of Babylon, we sat and wept as we thought of Jerusalem.

Now in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river Chebar, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.

Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel Aviv, that lived by the river Chebar, and to where they lived; and I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days.

Yahweh’s word came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and Yahweh’s hand was there on him.

For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mixed my drink with tears,because of your indignation and your wrath; for you have taken me up and thrown me away.My days are like a long shadow. I have withered like grass.But you, Yahweh, will remain forever; your renown endures to all generations.You will arise and have mercy on Zion; for it is time to have pity on her. Yes, the set time has come.For your servants take pleasure in her stones, and have pity on her dust.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a straight way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our possessions.

I didn’t sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice. I sat alone because of your hand, for you have filled me with indignation.

When he came near, he saw the city and wept over it,

But if you will not hear it, my soul will weep in secret for your pride. My eye will weep bitterly, and run down with tears, because Yahweh’s flock has been taken captive.Say to the king and to the queen mother,“ Humble yourselves. Sit down, for your crowns have come down, even the crown of your glory.

The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground. They keep silence. They have cast up dust on their heads. They have clothed themselves with sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.My eyes fail with tears. My heart is troubled. My liver is poured on the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young children and the infants swoon in the streets of the city.

My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.

They said to me,“ The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”When I heard these words, I sat down and wept, and mourned several days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

I said to the king,“ Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”

You who have escaped the sword, go! Don’t stand still! Remember Yahweh from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.”“ We are confounded, because we have heard reproach. Confusion has covered our faces, for strangers have come into the sanctuaries of Yahweh’s house.”

Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no relief. Don’t let the your eyes rest.

These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me, how I used to go with the crowd, and led them to God’s house, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping a holy day.

When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn’t recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandit by the way.

My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became the source of four rivers.The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also there.The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush.The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three whole weeks.I ate no pleasant bread. No meat or wine came into my mouth. I didn’t anoint myself at all, until three whole weeks were fulfilled.

“ Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her. Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn over her;

I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
