On July 31 of my thirtieth year, while I was with the Judean exiles beside the Kebar River in Babylon, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

Then I came to the colony of Judean exiles in Tel abib, beside the Kebar River. I was overwhelmed and sat among them for seven days.

I eat ashes for food. My tears run down into my drinkbecause of your anger and wrath. For you have picked me up and thrown me out.My life passes as swiftly as the evening shadows. I am withering away like grass.But you, O Lord, will sit on your throne forever. Your fame will endure to every generation.You will arise and have mercy on Jerusalem— and now is the time to pity her, now is the time you promised to help.For your people love every stone in her walls and cherish even the dust in her streets.

And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.

I never joined the people in their merry feasts. I sat alone because your hand was on me. I was filled with indignation at their sins.

But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.

And if you still refuse to listen, I will weep alone because of your pride. The leaders of beautiful Jerusalem sit on the ground in silence. They are clothed in burlap and throw dust on their heads. The young women of Jerusalem hang their heads in shame.I have cried until the tears no longer come; my heart is broken. My spirit is poured out in agony as I see the desperate plight of my people. Little children and tiny babies are fainting and dying in the streets.

My heart is breaking over the fate of all the women of Jerusalem.

They said to me,“ Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven.

but I replied,“ Long live the king! How can I not be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”

Get out, all you who have escaped the sword! Do not stand and watch— flee while you can! Remember the Lord, though you are in a far off land, and think about your home in Jerusalem.”“ We are ashamed,” the people say.“ We are insulted and disgraced because the Lord’s Temple has been defiled by foreigners.”

Cry aloud before the Lord, O walls of beautiful Jerusalem! Let your tears flow like a river day and night. Give yourselves no rest; give your eyes no relief.

My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!

When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief.Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.

We broke camp at the Ahava Canal on April 19 and started off to Jerusalem. And the gracious hand of our God protected us and saved us from enemies and bandits along the way.

Tears stream from my eyes because of the destruction of my people!

“ For all these things I weep; tears flow down my cheeks. No one is here to comfort me; any who might encourage me are far away. My children have no future, for the enemy has conquered us.”

A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches.The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found.The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there.The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush.The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates.

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting. I also wore rough burlap and sprinkled myself with ashes.

When this vision came to me, I, Daniel, had been in mourning for three whole weeks.All that time I had eaten no rich food. No meat or wine crossed my lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks had passed.

“ Rejoice with Jerusalem! Be glad with her, all you who love her and all you who mourn for her.

And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will be clothed in burlap and will prophesy during those 1,260 days.”
