大卫是先知，知道上帝曾起誓要从他的后裔中选立一人继承他的王位。

如果他的后代背弃我的律法，不遵行我的典章，触犯我的律例，不守我的诫命，我就会因他们的罪用杖惩罚他们，用鞭子责打他们。但我不会收回我的慈爱，也不会背弃我的信实。我必不毁约，也不食言。因我曾凭自己的圣洁向大卫起誓，我绝无谎言。

耶和华说：“我亲自与他们立约，我赐给他们的灵和我放在他们口中的话，必不离开他们和他们的子子孙孙，从现在直到永远。这是耶和华说的。”

祂伟大无比，将被称为至高者的儿子，主上帝要把祂祖先大卫的王位赐给祂。祂要永远统治以色列，祂的国度永无穷尽。”
