My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.

Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said,“ Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”And David said,“ What have I done now? Is there not a cause?”

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

“ If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,” Let Israel now say—

But David occasionally went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying,“ Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”

that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.

So Saul’s servants spoke those words in the hearing of David. And David said,“ Does it seem to you a light thing to be a king’s son-in-law, seeing I am a poor and lightly esteemed man?”

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!

Then one of the servants answered and said,“ Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
