爾曹早起遲眠、辛苦求食、亦屬徒勞、惟主所喜愛者、主必使之安然寢寐、

擾擾復攘攘。孜孜度晨昏。究竟何所得。愁苦供盤飱。小人長戚戚。君子坦蕩蕩。心安身亦泰。美睡主所賞。

In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.

It’s useless for you to work from early morning until late at night just to get food to eat. God provides for those he loves even while they sleep.

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.

It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food— yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves.

It is futile for you to rise up early, To stay up late, To eat the bread of painful labor; This is how He gives to His beloved sleep.

It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.

It is vain for you to rise up early, To take rest late, To eat the bread of toil; For so he giveth unto his beloved sleep.

In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food— yes, He gives sleep to the one He loves.

It is vain for you to rise early, come home late, and work so hard for your food. Yes, he can provide for those whom he loves even when they sleep.

The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the abundance of the rich will not allow him to sleep.

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for Yahweh sustains me.

On this I awakened, and saw; and my sleep was sweet to me.

You will be secure, because there is hope. Yes, you will search, and will take your rest in safety.

Therefore I began to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor in which I had labored under the sun.For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, with knowledge, and with skillfulness; yet he shall leave it for his portion to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.For what does a man have of all his labor and of the striving of his heart, in which he labors under the sun?For all his days are sorrows, and his travail is grief; yes, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

“‘ I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause evil animals to cease out of the land. They will dwell securely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him.The same night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Guards in front of the door kept the prison.

She rises also while it is yet night, gives food to her household, and portions for her servant girls.She considers a field, and buys it. With the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard.She arms her waist with strength, and makes her arms strong.She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp doesn’t go out by night.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

I said in my heart,“ Come now, I will test you with mirth: therefore enjoy pleasure;” and behold, this also was vanity.I said of laughter,“ It is foolishness;” and of mirth,“ What does it accomplish?”I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold of folly, until I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their lives.I made myself great works. I built myself houses. I got myself male and female singers, and the delights of the sons of men: musical instruments, and that of all sorts.So I was great, and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also remained with me.Whatever my eyes desired, I didn’t keep from them. I didn’t withhold my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor, and this was my portion from all my labor.Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth.“ For whom then, do I labor and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.

To Adam he said,“ Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and ate from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying,‘ You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life.It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field.You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”

So that your beloved may be delivered, save with your right hand, and answer us.

Behold, you have made my days hand widths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath.” Selah.“ Surely every man walks like a shadow. Surely they busy themselves in vain. He heaps up, and doesn’t know who shall gather.

All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
