The Pharisee stood and began praying this in regard to himself:‘ God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but was beating his chest, saying,‘ God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’

Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, For my soul takes refuge in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge Until destruction passes by.

And he spoke in the presence of his brothers and the wealthy people of Samaria and said,“ What are these feeble Jews doing? Are they going to restore the temple for themselves? Can they offer sacrifices? Can they finish it in a day? Can they revive the stones from the heaps of rubble, even the burned ones?”Now Tobiah the Ammonite was near him, and he said,“ Even what they are building— if a fox were to jump on it, it would break their stone wall down!”Hear, O our God, how we are an object of contempt! Return their taunting on their own heads, and turn them into plunder in a land of captivity.

He was despised and abandoned by men, A man of great pain and familiar with sickness; And like one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we had no regard for Him.

Remember, Lord, the taunt against Your servants; How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples,With which Your enemies have taunted, Lord, With which they have taunted the footsteps of Your anointed.

And the people stood by, watching. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying,“ He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”

But as for me, my prayer is to You, Lord, at an acceptable time; God, in the greatness of Your mercy, Answer me with Your saving truth.Rescue me from the mud and do not let me sink; May I be rescued from those who hate me, and from the depths of water.May the flood of water not overflow me Nor the deep swallow me up, Nor the pit close its mouth on me.Answer me, Lord, for Your mercy is good; According to the greatness of Your compassion, turn to me,

You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, Of scoffing and ridicule to those around us.You make us a proverb among the nations, A laughingstock among the peoples.All day long my dishonor is before me And I am covered with my humiliation,Because of the voice of one who taunts and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger.

Answer me when I call, God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

Be gracious to me, God, for a man has trampled upon me; Fighting all day long he oppresses me.My enemies have trampled upon me all day long, For they are many who fight proudly against me.

Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were ridiculing Him.
