My anger is wearing me out, because my enemies don’t pay any attention to your words.

My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words.

I am overwhelmed with indignation, for my enemies have disregarded your words.

His disciples remembered that it is written:“ Zeal for your house will consume me.”

for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.

He replied,“ I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures:“‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’

For God said,‘ Honor your father and mother’ and‘ Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is‘ devoted to God,’they are not to‘ honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God, and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets he tried to persuade them about Jesus.Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement:“ The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said through Isaiah the prophet:“‘ Go to this people and say,“ You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

Jesus replied,“ You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

He answered,“ Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread— which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent?

He replied,“ I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.

“ Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.“ Yes,” replied Jesus,“ have you never read,“‘ From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”

Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on God.

“ It is written,” he said to them,“‘ My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it‘ a den of robbers.’”

But go and learn what this means:‘ I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
