My anger overwhelms me because my foes forget your words.

My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words.

My anger is wearing me out, because my enemies don’t pay any attention to your words.

My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words.

I am overwhelmed with indignation, for my enemies have disregarded your words.

My zeal has consumed me, Because my enemies have forgotten Your words.

And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me.

because zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.

He replied,“ I have been very zealous for the LORD God of Armies, but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are looking for me to take my life.”

Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is what the Lord has done and it is wonderful in our eyes?

For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.But you say,‘ Whoever tells his father or mother,“ Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,”he does not have to honor his father.’ In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition.

After arranging a day with him, many came to him at his lodging. From dawn to dusk he expounded and testified about the kingdom of God. He tried to persuade them about Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.Some were persuaded by what he said, but others did not believe.Disagreeing among themselves, they began to leave after Paul made one statement:“ The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiahwhen he said, Go to these people and say: You will always be listening, but never understanding; and you will always be looking, but never perceiving.For the hearts of these people have grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.

Jesus answered them,“ You are mistaken, because you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God.

He said to them,“ Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry:how he entered the house of God, and they ate the bread of the Presence— which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?Or haven’t you read in the law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?

“ I have been very zealous for the LORD God of Armies,” he replied,“ but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they’re looking for me to take my life.”

Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.

and said to him,“ Do you hear what these children are saying?” Jesus replied,“ Yes, have you never read: You have prepared praise from the mouths of infants and nursing babies?”

Will evildoers never understand? They consume my people as they consume bread; they do not call on God.

He said to them,“ It is written, my house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves!”

Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
