His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for thy house shall eat me up.

For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me.

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they that were with him;how he entered into the house of God, and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them that were with him, but only for the priests?Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless?

For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.

and said unto him, Hearest thou what these are saying? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea: did ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, Who eat up my people as they eat bread, And call not upon God?

and he saith unto them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer: but ye make it a den of robbers.

But go ye and learn what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice: for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.
