I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.

I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts.

I am more discerning than those older than I, for I observe your precepts.

“‘ How can you say,“ We are wise because we have the word of the Lord,” when your teachers have twisted it by writing lies?These wise teachers will fall into the trap of their own foolishness, for they have rejected the word of the Lord. Are they so wise after all?

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom. Praise him forever!

What do you know that we don’t? What do you understand that we do not?On our side are aged, gray haired men much older than your father!

Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old.

Then King Rehoboam discussed the matter with the older men who had counseled his father, Solomon.“ What is your advice?” he asked.“ How should I answer these people?”The older counselors replied,“ If you are willing to be a servant to these people today and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your loyal subjects.”But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.“ What is your advice?” he asked them.“ How should I answer these people who want me to lighten the burdens imposed by my father?”The young men replied,“ This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden:‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!Yes, my father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!’”Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to hear Rehoboam’s decision, just as the king had ordered.But Rehoboam spoke harshly to the people, for he rejected the advice of the older counselorsand followed the counsel of his younger advisers. He told the people,“ My father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!”So the king paid no attention to the people. This turn of events was the will of the Lord, for it fulfilled the Lord’s message to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh.

Elihu had waited for the others to speak to Job because they were older than he.

I thought,‘ Those who are older should speak, for wisdom comes with age.’But there is a spirit within people, the breath of the Almighty within them, that makes them intelligent.Sometimes the elders are not wise. Sometimes the aged do not understand justice.So listen to me, and let me tell you what I think.

If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.

And this is what he says to all humanity:‘ The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.’”

“ Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.
