They swarmed around me like bees, but they were consumed as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them down.

They attacked me like swarms of bees. But they were burned up as quickly as thorns in a fire. By the Lord’ s power I destroyed them.

They surrounded me like bees; they went out like a fire among thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them off!

But the Amorites who lived there came out against you like a swarm of bees. They chased and battered you all the way from Seir to Hormah.

May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers.

My anger will be gone. If I find briers and thorns growing, I will attack them; I will burn them up—

His enemies, tangled like thornbushes and staggering like drunks, will be burned up like dry stubble in a field.

God will sweep them away, both young and old, faster than a pot heats over burning thorns.

David replied to the Philistine,“ You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies— the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

In times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry. May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm.

Then Asa cried out to the Lord his God,“ O Lord, no one but you can help the powerless against the mighty! Help us, O Lord our God, for we trust in you alone. It is in your name that we have come against this vast horde. O Lord, you are our God; do not let mere men prevail against you!”So the Lord defeated the Ethiopians in the presence of Asa and the army of Judah, and the enemy fled.

So David asked God,“ Should I go out to fight the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord replied,“ Yes, go ahead. I will hand them over to you.”So David and his troops went up to Baal perazim and defeated the Philistines there.“ God did it!” David exclaimed.“ He used me to burst through my enemies like a raging flood!” So they named that place Baal perazim( which means“ the Lord who bursts through”).

A fool’s laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless.

And once again David asked God what to do.“ Do not attack them straight on,” God replied.“ Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the poplar trees.When you hear a sound like marching feet in the tops of the poplar trees, go out and attack! That will be the signal that God is moving ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army.”So David did what God commanded, and they struck down the Philistine army all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

But you will not even need to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the Lord’s victory. He is with you, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out against them tomorrow, for the Lord is with you!”Then King Jehoshaphat bowed low with his face to the ground. And all the people of Judah and Jerusalem did the same, worshiping the Lord.Then the Levites from the clans of Kohath and Korah stood to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud shout.Early the next morning the army of Judah went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said,“ Listen to me, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be able to stand firm. Believe in his prophets, and you will succeed.”After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang:“ Give thanks to the Lord; his faithful love endures forever!”At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves.

At that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa and told him,“ Because you have put your trust in the king of Aram instead of in the Lord your God, you missed your chance to destroy the army of the king of Aram.Don’t you remember what happened to the Ethiopians and Libyans and their vast army, with all of their chariots and charioteers? At that time you relied on the Lord, and he handed them over to you.The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. What a fool you have been! From now on you will be at war.”

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!

But the godless are like thorns to be thrown away, for they tear the hand that touches them.

As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze,chase them with your fierce storm; terrify them with your tempest.

But God had decided that this visit would be Ahaziah’s downfall. While he was there, Ahaziah went out with Joram to meet Jehu grandson of Nimshi, whom the Lord had appointed to destroy the dynasty of Ahab.While Jehu was executing judgment against the family of Ahab, he happened to meet some of Judah’s officials and Ahaziah’s relatives who were traveling with Ahaziah. So Jehu killed them all.
