The stones will be a reminder to you. When your children ask someday,‘ Why are these stones important to you?’tell them how the water of the Jordan stopped flowing before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the water of the Jordan stopped flowing. These stones will be a lasting memorial for the Israelites.”

When your children ask you,‘ What does this ceremony mean to you?’–then you will say,‘ It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s Passover, when he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt, when he struck Egypt and delivered our households.’” The people bowed down low to the ground,

I will tell of the faithful acts of the LORD, of the LORD’s praiseworthy deeds. I will tell about all the LORD did for us, the many good things he did for the family of Israel, because of his compassion and great faithfulness.

In the darkness a light shines for the godly, for each one who is merciful, compassionate, and just.

The LORD passed by before him and proclaimed:“ The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness,keeping loyal love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. we will not hide from their descendants. We will tell the next generation about the LORD’s praiseworthy acts, about his strength and the amazing things he has done.He established a rule in Jacob; he set up a law in Israel. He commanded our ancestors to make his deeds known to their descendants,so that the next generation, children yet to be born, might know about them. They will grow up and tell their descendants about them.Then they will place their confidence in God. They will not forget the works of God, and they will obey his commands.Then they will not be like their ancestors, who were a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that was not committed and faithful to God.

Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites!For after I have brought them to the land I promised to their ancestors– one flowing with milk and honey– and they eat their fill and become fat, then they will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.Then when many disasters and distresses overcome them this song will testify against them, for their descendants will not forget it. I know the intentions they have in mind today, even before I bring them to the land I have promised.”So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites,and the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun,“ Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you.”When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety,he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the LORD’s covenant,“ Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. It will remain there as a witness against you,for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness. Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the LORD; you will be even more rebellious after my death!Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them.For I know that after I die you will totally corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly before the LORD, inciting him to anger because of your actions.”Then Moses recited the words of this song from start to finish in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel.

He told the Israelites,“ When your children someday ask their fathers,‘ What do these stones represent?’explain to your children,‘ Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry ground.’For the LORD your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you while you crossed over. It was just like when the LORD your God dried up the Red Sea before us while we crossed it.He has done this so all the nations of the earth might recognize the LORD’s power and so you might always obey the LORD your God.”

Yet he is compassionate. He forgives sin and does not destroy. He often holds back his anger, and does not stir up his fury.

Again, however, pay very careful attention, lest you forget the things you have seen and disregard them for the rest of your life; instead teach them to your children and grandchildren.

There is no other God like you! You forgive sin and pardon the rebellion of those who remain among your people. You do not remain angry forever, but delight in showing loyal love.You will once again have mercy on us; you will conquer our evil deeds; you will hurl our sins into the depths of the sea.
