Yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry;

窮極呼主。主聞其哭。天心實慈。愍其窘蹙。

Yet he heard them when they cried out. He paid special attention to their suffering.

Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress, when he heard their cry.

Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries.

But when they cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them.

Because he had nine hundred chariots fitted with iron and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the Lord for help.

Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them.

They said to Samuel,“ Do not stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.”Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying,“ Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.When the Israelites cried out to the Lord because of Midian,he sent them a prophet, who said,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors; I drove them out before you and gave you their land.I said to you,‘ I am the Lord your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.’ But you have not listened to me.”

The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering; there was no one to help them.And since the Lord had not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.

Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord,“ We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”The Lord replied,“ When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”But the Israelites said to the Lord,“ We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.”Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.

So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.“ But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.“ You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said,‘ The person who obeys them will live by them.’ Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff- necked and refused to listen.For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.“ Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes— the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today.In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous; you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our ancestors did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the statutes you warned them to keep.Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.“ But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces.Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.“ In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”
