By the waters of Meribah the Lord’ s people made him angry. Moses got in trouble because of them.

他們因了米利巴水的緣故惹了永恆主的震怒，以致摩西為了他們的緣故也喫虧受損；

他們又在米利巴的水邊惹神發怒，以致摩西也因他們的緣故受了虧損；

民在米利巴水、復干厥怒、累及摩西兮、

在米利巴水濱、民干主怒摩西因此、亦遭患難兮、

民在米利巴水干犯主怒、摩西亦因之遭遇患難、

風波之地。民亦忤主。每瑟受累。實為彼故。

By the waters of Meribah they angered the Lord, and trouble came to Moses because of them;

They angered him at the waters of Meribah, and it went ill with Moses on their account,

At Meribah, too, they angered the Lord, causing Moses serious trouble.

They angered the LORD at the Waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them,

They also provoked Him to wrath at the waters of Meribah, So that it went badly for Moses on their account.

They angered Him also at the waters of strife, So that it went ill with Moses on account of them;

They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, So that it went ill with Moses for their sakes;

They angered the Lord at the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them;

They angered[ him] also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

They made him angry by the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them,

They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, so that Moses was troubled for their sakes;

You called out when you were in trouble, and I saved you. I answered you out of a thundercloud. I tested you at the waters of Meribah.

Because of you, the Lord became angry with me also. He said,“ You will not enter the land either.

The people didn’t have any water. So they gathered together to oppose Moses and Aaron.They argued with Moses. They said,“ We wish we had died when our people fell dead in front of the Lord.Why did you bring the Lord’ s people into this desert? We and our livestock will die here.Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Why did you bring us to this terrible place? It doesn’t have any grain or figs. It doesn’t have any grapes or pomegranates. There isn’t even any water for us to drink!”Moses and Aaron left the people. They went to the entrance to the tent of meeting. There they fell with their faces to the ground. Then the glory of the Lord appeared to them.The Lord said to Moses,“ Get your walking stick. You and your brother Aaron gather the people together. Then speak to that rock while everyone is watching. It will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community. Then they and their livestock can drink it.”So Moses took the walking stick from the tent. He did just as the Lord had commanded him.He and Aaron gathered the people together in front of the rock. Moses said to them,“ Listen, you who refuse to obey! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?”Then Moses raised his arm. He hit the rock twice with his walking stick. Water poured out. And the people and their livestock drank it.But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,“ You did not trust in me enough to honor me. You did not honor me as the holy God in front of the Israelites. So you will not bring this community into the land I am giving them.”Those were the waters of Meribah. That’s where the Israelites argued with the Lord. And that’s where he was proven to be holy among them.

It was near the border of Edom. There the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,“ Aaron will join the members of his family who have already died. He will not enter the land I am giving to the Israelites. Both of you refused to obey my command. You did it at the waters of Meribah.

The Lord was angry with me because of what you did. He promised that he would never let me go across the Jordan River. He promised that I would never enter that good land. It’s the land the Lord your God is giving you as your own.

After you have seen it, you too will join the members of your family who have already died. You will die, just as your brother Aaron did.The community refused to obey me at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin. At that time, you and Aaron did not obey my command. You did not honor me in front of them as the holy God.”

How often they refused to obey him in the desert! How often they caused him sorrow in that dry and empty land!

But the Lord was angry with me because of what you did. He wouldn’t listen to me.“ That is enough!” the Lord said.“ Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.
