In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test.

在曠野縱其欲、在荒原試上帝兮、

爰至曠野、縱欲妄行、以試上帝兮、

在曠野有貪心、在荒墟試探天主、

纔得安寧。便恣淫佚。率彼曠野。惟求口實。

In the desert they longed for food. In that dry and empty land they tested God.

But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert;

In the wilderness their desires ran wild, testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.

They were seized with craving in the wilderness and tested God in the desert.

So they quarreled with Moses and said,“ Give us water to drink.” Moses replied,“ Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”

Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said,“ If only we had meat to eat!

But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,

do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness,where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did.That is why I was angry with that generation; I said,‘ Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’

They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.They spoke against God; they said,“ Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”

But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

“ Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.

not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times—

You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.
