纔得安寧。便恣淫佚。率彼曠野。惟求口實。

In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test.

In the desert they longed for food. In that dry and empty land they tested God.

But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert;

In the wilderness their desires ran wild, testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.

So the people quarreled with Moses and said,“ Give us water so that we may drink!” And Moses said to them,“ Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”

Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they indeed craved them.

Now the rabble who were among them had greedy cravings; and the sons of Israel also wept again and said,“ Who will give us meat to eat?

Yet before they had abandoned their longing, While their food was in their mouths,

Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As on the day of trial in the wilderness,Where your fathers put Me to the test, And saw My works for forty years.Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said,‘ They always go astray in their heart, And they did not know My ways’;

And in their heart they put God to the test By asking for food that suited their taste.Then they spoke against God; They said,“ Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare meat for His people?”

While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very severe plague.So that place was named Kibroth hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had been greedy.

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, As on the day of Massah in the wilderness,“ When your fathers put Me to the test, They tested Me, though they had seen My work.

How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert!Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel.

Certainly all the people who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice,

“ Then at Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth hattaavah you kept provoking the Lord to anger.
