Is this the one who made the world like a desert, who ruined its cities, and refused to free his prisoners so they could return home?”’

Now King Hazael of Syria oppressed Israel throughout Jehoahaz’s reign.But the LORD had mercy on them and felt pity for them. He extended his favor to them because of the promise he had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He has been unwilling to destroy them or remove them from his presence to this very day.

So the LORD brought against them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria. They seized Manasseh, put hooks in his nose, bound him with bronze chains, and carried him away to Babylon.In his pain Manasseh asked the LORD his God for mercy and truly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.When he prayed to the LORD, the LORD responded to him and answered favorably his cry for mercy. He completely cleaned me out.”The person who lives in Zion says,“ May Babylon pay for the violence done to me and to my relatives.” Jerusalem says,“ May those living in Babylonia pay for the bloodshed of my people.”

During that long period of time the king of Egypt died, and the Israelites groaned because of the slave labor. They cried out, and their desperate cry because of their slave labor went up to God.God heard their groaning, God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob,God saw the Israelites, and God understood….

Jehoahaz asked for the LORD’s mercy and the LORD responded favorably, for he saw that Israel was oppressed by the king of Syria.

On that very night before Herod was going to bring him out for trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison.Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the prison cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up, saying,“ Get up quickly!” And the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.The angel said to him,“ Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.” Peter did so. Then the angel said to him,“ Put on your cloak and follow me.”Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening through the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.After they had passed the first and second guards, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went outside and walked down one narrow street, when at once the angel left him.When Peter came to himself, he said,“ Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from everything the Jewish people were expecting to happen.”

From the city the dying groan, and the wounded cry out for help, but God charges no one with wrongdoing.
