I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.

I won’t look at anything that is evil and call it good. I hate the acts of people who aren’t faithful to you. I won’t have anything to do with those things.

I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.

I will not let anything worthless guide me. I hate the practice of transgression; it will not cling to me.

I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.

I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.

I will set no base thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; It shall not cleave unto me.

Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.

Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath.He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told,“ She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”

But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

“ You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”

And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say,“ God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else.Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

Don’t lust for her beauty. Don’t let her coy glances seduce you.

Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.

“ So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left.

Do not be mean spirited and refuse someone a loan because the year for canceling debts is close at hand. If you refuse to make the loan and the needy person cries out to the Lord, you will be considered guilty of sin.

Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

“ Don’t be afraid,” Samuel reassured them.“ You have certainly done wrong, but make sure now that you worship the Lord with all your heart, and don’t turn your back on him.Don’t go back to worshiping worthless idols that cannot help or rescue you— they are totally useless!

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.

But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one!

So now that you know God( or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world?

“ But you! You have eyes only for greed and dishonesty! You murder the innocent, oppress the poor, and reign ruthlessly.”

How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down and sacrificed to it. They are saying,‘ These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”

Again and again they tested God’s patience and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

Forget all this gloom. Get off your narrow path. Stop telling us about your‘ Holy One of Israel.’”

I hate those with divided loyalties, but I love your instructions.

It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life.

But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.

Don’t gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down.For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper.You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things.You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast.And you will say,“ They hit me, but I didn’t feel it. I didn’t even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?”

Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a large nation, just as he swore to your ancestors.

When you want a piece of land, you find a way to seize it. When you want someone’s house, you take it by fraud and violence. You cheat a man of his property, stealing his family’s inheritance.

The Lord rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence.For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not turned from my God to follow evil.I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees.I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin.

“ I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has refused to obey my command.” Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out to the Lord all night.

One day Ahab said to Naboth,“ Since your vineyard is so convenient to my palace, I would like to buy it to use as a vegetable garden. I will give you a better vineyard in exchange, or if you prefer, I will pay you for it.”But Naboth replied,“ The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance that was passed down by my ancestors.”So Ahab went home angry and sullen because of Naboth’s answer. The king went to bed with his face to the wall and refused to eat!“ What’s the matter?” his wife Jezebel asked him.“ What’s made you so upset that you’re not eating?”“ I asked Naboth to sell me his vineyard or trade it, but he refused!” Ahab told her.“ Are you the king of Israel or not?” Jezebel demanded.“ Get up and eat something, and don’t worry about it. I’ll get you Naboth’s vineyard!”So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the elders and other leaders of the town where Naboth lived.In her letters she commanded:“ Call the citizens together for a time of fasting, and give Naboth a place of honor.And then seat two scoundrels across from him who will accuse him of cursing God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the elders and other town leaders followed the instructions Jezebel had written in the letters.They called for a fast and put Naboth at a prominent place before the people.Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him. And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying,“ He cursed God and the king.” So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death.The town leaders then sent word to Jezebel,“ Naboth has been stoned to death.”When Jezebel heard the news, she said to Ahab,“ You know the vineyard Naboth wouldn’t sell you? Well, you can have it now! He’s dead!”So Ahab immediately went down to the vineyard of Naboth to claim it.But the Lord said to Elijah,“ Go down to meet King Ahab of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He will be at Naboth’s vineyard in Jezreel, claiming it for himself.Give him this message:‘ This is what the Lord says: Wasn’t it enough that you killed Naboth? Must you rob him, too? Because you have done this, dogs will lick your blood at the very place where they licked the blood of Naboth!’”“ So, my enemy, you have found me!” Ahab exclaimed to Elijah.“ Yes,” Elijah answered,“ I have come because you have sold yourself to what is evil in the Lord’s sight.So now the Lord says,‘ I will bring disaster on you and consume you. I will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel!I am going to destroy your family as I did the family of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the family of Baasha son of Ahijah, for you have made me very angry and have led Israel into sin.’“ And regarding Jezebel, the Lord says,‘ Dogs will eat Jezebel’s body at the plot of land in Jezreel.’“ The members of Ahab’s family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures.”( No one else so completely sold himself to what was evil in the Lord’s sight as Ahab did under the influence of his wife Jezebel.His worst outrage was worshiping idols just as the Amorites had done— the people whom the Lord had driven out from the land ahead of the Israelites.)But when Ahab heard this message, he tore his clothing, dressed in burlap, and fasted. He even slept in burlap and went about in deep mourning.Then another message from the Lord came to Elijah:“ Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has done this, I will not do what I promised during his lifetime. It will happen to his sons; I will destroy his dynasty.”

I said to myself,“ I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.”

I do not spend time with liars or go along with hypocrites.I hate the gatherings of those who do evil, and I refuse to join in with the wicked.

Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good.

Those who are honest and fair, who refuse to profit by fraud, who stay far away from bribes, who refuse to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong—

You who love the Lord, hate evil! He protects the lives of his godly people and rescues them from the power of the wicked.

They turned back and were as faithless as their parents. They were as undependable as a crooked bow.

For they go up to their roofs and bow down to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the Lord, but then they worship Molech, too.And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the Lord’s guidance or seek my blessings.”

Their hearts are like an oven blazing with intrigue. Their plot smolders through the night, and in the morning it breaks out like a raging fire.Burning like an oven, they consume their leaders. They kill their kings one after another, and no one cries to me for help.

But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O Lord. Take them away with those who do evil. May Israel have peace!
