怠惰者歟、偃臥何其久、寢睡何時興、

惟爾懈惰思寢、何時得寤。

怠惰之人、爾偃息將至何時、爾寢臥何時方起、

A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest;So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.

Therefore He says:“ Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”

O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, That you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?

For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.For when they say,“ Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.

Understand, you senseless among the people; And you fools, when will you be wise?

“ How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge.
