They are pure in their own eyes, but they are filthy and unwashed.They look proudly around, casting disdainful glances.They have teeth like swords and fangs like knives. They devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among humanity.

‘ Cursed is anyone who dishonors father or mother.’ And all the people will reply,‘ Amen.’

The parents must say to the elders,‘ This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious and refuses to obey. He is a glutton and a drunkard.’Then all the men of his town must stone him to death. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you, and all Israel will hear about it and be afraid.

But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

For instance, God says,‘ Honor your father and mother,’ and‘ Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents,‘ Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
