In those days saw I in Judah[ some] treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all[ manner of] burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified[ against them] in the day wherein they sold victuals.

Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who[ is so] faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute[ any] thing unto his servant,[ nor] to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.

And[ one] of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest,[ was] son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;

And the people gave a shout,[ saying, It is] the voice of a god, and not of a man.

And Samuel said, What[ meaneth] then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.And Samuel said, When thou[ wast] little in thine own sight,[ wast] thou not[ made] the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.And Samuel said, Hath the LORD[ as great] delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey[ is] better than sacrifice,[ and] to hearken than the fat of rams.For rebellion[ is as] the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness[ is as] iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from[ being] king.And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort[ you] that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found[ thee]: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he[ was] of the prophets.And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of[ thy] hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.

Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which[ is] on the south of Jeshimon?Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part[ shall be] to deliver him into the king’s hand.And Saul said, Blessed[ be] ye of the LORD; for ye have compassion on me.

Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing[ is] this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and[ some] of my servants set I at the gates,[ that] there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given[ them]: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.And Elisha said,[ As] the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing[ to answer].Also I said, It[ is] not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?I likewise,[ and] my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth[ part] of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.Then said they, We will restore[ them], and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse[ him], saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,We accept[ it] always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.

In those days also saw I Jews[ that] had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon,[ and] of Moab:And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God,[ saying], Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.But of these who seemed to be somewhat,( whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed[ to be somewhat] in conference added nothing to me:

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer[ it to be so] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramothgilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner.And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will persuade him.And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade[ him], and prevail also: go forth, and do so.Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself.And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king’s son;And say, Thus saith the king, Put this[ fellow] in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you.

But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.
