A tyrannical ruler practices extortion, but one who hates ill- gotten gain will enjoy a long reign.

A ruler who is mean to his people takes money from them by force. But one who hates money gained in the wrong way will rule a long time.

A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.

A leader who lacks understanding is very oppressive, but one who hates dishonest profit prolongs his life.

A leader who is a great oppressor lacks understanding, But a person who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.

The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor; But he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.

Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless.

The young men replied,“ This is what you should tell those complainers who want a lighter burden:‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!

Those who are honest and fair, who refuse to profit by fraud, who stay far away from bribes, who refuse to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong—these are the ones who will dwell on high. The rocks of the mountains will be their fortress. Food will be supplied to them, and they will have water in abundance.

and followed the counsel of his younger advisers. He told the people,“ My father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!”

The former governors, in contrast, had laid heavy burdens on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine, besides forty pieces of silver. Even their assistants took advantage of the people. But because I feared God, I did not act that way.

Listen to me, you fat cows living in Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, and who are always calling to your husbands,“ Bring us another drink!”

But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten.
