Confess that you refused to listen to my voice. I, the Lord, have spoken!

I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain.As I was praying, Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, came swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice.He explained to me,“ Daniel, I have come here to give you insight and understanding.The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision.

Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron.“ I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you,” he confessed.“ Forgive my sin, just this once, and plead with the Lord your God to take away this death from me.”

No amount of soap or lye can make you clean. I still see the stain of your guilt. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!“ You say,‘ That’s not true! Then Saul admitted to Samuel,“ Yes, I have sinned. I have disobeyed your instructions and the Lord’s command, for I was afraid of the people and did what they demanded.

But in that land of exile, they might turn to you in repentance and pray,‘ We have sinned, done evil, and acted wickedly.’If they turn to you with their whole heart and soul in the land of their enemies and pray toward the land you gave to their ancestors— toward this city you have chosen, and toward this Temple I have built to honor your name—then hear their prayers and their petition from heaven where you live, and uphold their cause.

I will go home to my father and say,“ Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you,and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’“ So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.His son said to him,‘ Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’“ But his father said to the servants,‘ Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast,for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.

The man replied,“ It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”Then the Lord God asked the woman,“ What have you done?”“ The serpent deceived me,” she replied.“ That’s why I ate it.”

Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.

“ I have sinned,” he declared,“ for I have betrayed an innocent man.”“ What do we care?” they retorted.“ That’s your problem.”Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself.

Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses.

“ What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy— full of greed and self indulgence!You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.“ What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs— beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.

When Samuel finally found him, Saul greeted him cheerfully.“ May the Lord bless you,” he said.“ I have carried out the Lord’s command!”

“ But at last my people will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors for betraying me and being hostile toward me.When I have turned their hostility back on them and brought them to the land of their enemies, then at last their stubborn hearts will be humbled, and they will pay for their sins.Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that all must repent of their sins and turn to God— and prove they have changed by the good things they do.

Afterward the Lord asked Cain,“ Where is your brother? Where is Abel?”“ I don’t know,” Cain responded.“ Am I my brother’s guardian?”

Then Saul pleaded again,“ I know I have sinned. But please, at least honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel by coming back with me so that I may worship the Lord your God.”
