The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and putting Jesus to the test, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.But He replied to them,“ When it is evening, you say,‘ It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’And in the morning,‘ There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but are you unable to discern the signs of the times?An evil and adulterous generation wants a sign; and so a sign will not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.

The rich person is wise in his own eyes, But the poor who has understanding sees through him.

Do you see a person wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

So they said to him,“ What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”He answered them,“ I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?”They spoke abusively to him and said,“ You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from.”The man answered and said to them,“ Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes!We know that God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is God fearing and does His will, He listens to him.Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

For I do not want you, brothers and sisters, to be uninformed of this mystery— so that you will not be wise in your own estimation— that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;

Do not answer a fool according to his foolishness, Or you will also be like him.

This testimony is true. For this reason reprimand them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,

When they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up and said to them,“ He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

When He entered the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said,“ By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”But Jesus responded and said to them,“ I will also ask you one question, which, if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.The baptism of John was from what source: from heaven or from men?” And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say to us,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.”And answering Jesus, they said,“ We do not know.” He also said to them,“ Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Then they asked Baruch, saying,“ Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at Jeremiah’s dictation?”And Baruch said to them,“ He dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book.”

Now someone in the crowd said to Him,“ Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.”But He said to him,“ You there— who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over the two of you?”But He said to them,“ Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.”And He told them a parable, saying,“ The land of a rich man was very productive.And he began thinking to himself, saying,‘ What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’And he said,‘ This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there.And I will say to myself,“ You have many goods stored up for many years to come; relax, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!” ’But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’Such is the one who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich in relation to God.”

Then some Pharisees and scribes* came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,“ Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”And He answered and said to them,“ Why do you yourselves also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

And someone said to Him,“ Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them,“ Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin standing outside and knocking on the door, saying,‘ Lord, open up to us!’ and He then will answer and say to you,‘ I do not know where you are from.’Then you will begin saying,‘ We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets!’And yet He will say,‘ I do not know where you are from; leave Me, all you evildoers.’In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah approached and struck Micaiah on the cheek; and he said,“ How did the Spirit of the Lord pass from me to speak to you?”And Micaiah said,“ Behold, you are going to see how on that day when you go from one inner room to another trying to hide yourself.”Then the king of Israel said,“ Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king’s son;and say,‘ This is what the king says:“ Put this man in prison, and feed him enough bread and water to survive until I return safely.” ’ ”But Micaiah said,“ If you actually return safely, the Lord has not spoken by me.” And he said,“ Listen, all you people!”

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight!

Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said.And they* sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying,“ Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone.Tell us then, what do You think? Is it permissible to pay a poll tax to Caesar, or not?”But Jesus perceived their malice, and said,“ Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?Show Me the coin used for the poll tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.And He* said to them,“ Whose image and inscription is this?”They* said to Him,“ Caesar’s.” Then He* said to them,“ Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”And hearing this, they were amazed; and they left Him and went away.On that day some Sadducees( who say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and questioned Him,saying,“ Teacher, Moses said,‘ If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife, and raise up children for his brother.’Now there were seven brothers among us; and the first married and died, and having no children, he left his wife to his brother.It was the same also with the second brother, and the third, down to the seventh.Last of all, the woman died.In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her in marriage.”But Jesus answered and said to them,“ You are mistaken, since you do not understand the Scriptures nor the power of God.For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God:‘ I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
