It is not good to eat too much honey or to seek glory after glory.

Better to be lowly of spirit with the humble than to divide plunder with the proud.

LORD, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I do not get involved with things too great or too wondrous for me.

As for the donkeys that wandered away from you three days ago, don’t worry about them because they’ve been found. And who does all Israel desire but you and all your father’s family?”Saul responded,“ Am I not a Benjaminite from the smallest of Israel’s tribes and isn’t my clan the least important of all the clans of the Benjaminite tribe? So why have you said something like this to me?”Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them to the banquet hall, and gave them a place at the head of the thirty or so men who had been invited.

But Moses asked God,“ Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

“ So now this is what you are to say to my servant David:‘ This is what the LORD of Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a great name for you like that of the greatest on the earth.I will designate a place for my people Israel and plant them, so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not continue to oppress them as they have doneever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies.“‘ The LORD declares to you: The LORD himself will make a house for you.When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals.But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.’”Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.

Then David responded,“ Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel that I should become the king’s son-in-law?”When it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as a wife.Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when it was reported to Saul, it pleased him.“ I’ll give her to him,” Saul thought.“ She’ll be a trap for him, and the hand of the Philistines will be against him.” So Saul said to David a second time,“ You can now be my son-in-law.”Saul then ordered his servants,“ Speak to David in private and tell him,‘ Look, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Therefore, you should become the king’s son-in-law.’”Saul’s servants reported these words directly to David, but he replied,“ Is it trivial in your sight to become the king’s son-in-law? I am a poor commoner.”

Then Amaziah said to Amos,“ Go away, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah. Earn your living and give your prophecies there,but don’t ever prophesy at Bethel again, for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.”So Amos answered Amaziah,“ I was not a prophet or the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman, and I took care of sycamore figs.But the LORD took me from following the flock and said to me,‘ Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’”

Samuel continued,“ Although you once considered yourself unimportant, haven’t you become the leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel

But I protested,“ Oh no, Lord GOD! Look, I don’t know how to speak since I am only a youth.”Then the LORD said to me: Do not say,“ I am only a youth,” for you will go to everyone I send you to and speak whatever I tell you.Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to rescue you. This is the LORD’s declaration.Then the LORD reached out his hand, touched my mouth, and told me: I have now filled your mouth with my words.See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.
