Like a muddied spring or a polluted well are the righteous who give way to the wicked.

Sometimes godly people give in to those who are evil. Then they become like a muddy spring of water or a polluted well.

Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

I could see that she was drunk— drunk with the blood of God’s holy people who were witnesses for Jesus. I stared at her in complete amazement.

A servant girl came over and said to him,“ You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.”But Peter denied it in front of everyone.“ I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around,“ This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath.“ I don’t even know the man,” he said.A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said,“ You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.”Peter swore,“ A curse on me if I’m lying— I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.

Isn’t it enough for you to keep the best of the pastures for yourselves? Must you also trample down the rest? Isn’t it enough for you to drink clear water for yourselves? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet?Why must my flock eat what you have trampled down and drink water you have fouled?

“ Therefore, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers of religious law. How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.

Then the leaders plotted to kill Zechariah, and King Joash ordered that they stone him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s Temple.That was how King Joash repaid Jehoiada for his loyalty— by killing his son. Zechariah’s last words as he died were,“ May the Lord see what they are doing and avenge my death!”

For some of the Jews killed the prophets, and some even killed the Lord Jesus. Now they have persecuted us, too. They fail to please God and work against all humanity

Name one prophet your ancestors didn’t persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One— the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered.

“ But sir,” Ahimelech replied,“ is anyone among all your servants as faithful as David, your son in law? Why, he is the captain of your bodyguard and a highly honored member of your household!This was certainly not the first time I had consulted God for him! May the king not accuse me and my family in this matter, for I knew nothing at all of any plot against you.”“ You will surely die, Ahimelech, along with your entire family!” the king shouted.And he ordered his bodyguards,“ Kill these priests of the Lord, for they are allies and conspirators with David! They knew he was running away from me, but they didn’t tell me!” But Saul’s men refused to kill the Lord’s priests.Then the king said to Doeg,“ You do it.” So Doeg the Edomite turned on them and killed them that day, eighty five priests in all, still wearing their priestly garments.
