I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;

I went past the field of someone who didn’t want to work. I went past the vineyard of someone who didn’t have any sense.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of one lacking sense.

I passed by the field of a lazy one, And by the vineyard of a person lacking sense,

I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.

My experience shows that those who plant trouble and cultivate evil will harvest the same.

I have thought deeply about all that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to hurt each other.I have seen wicked people buried with honor. Yet they were the very ones who frequented the Temple and are now praised in the same city where they committed their crimes! This, too, is meaningless.When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong.

But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself.

Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise!Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work,they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up?A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.What are worthless and wicked people like? They are constant liars,signaling their deceit with a wink of the eye, a nudge of the foot, or the wiggle of fingers.Their perverted hearts plot evil, and they constantly stir up trouble.But they will be destroyed suddenly, broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing.There are six things the Lord hates— no, seven things he detests:haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent,a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong,a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.

Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless.So I concluded that the dead are better off than the living.But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless— like chasing the wind.“ Fools fold their idle hands, leading them to ruin.”And yet,“ Better to have one handful with quietness than two handfuls with hard work and chasing the wind.”I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun.This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense.

I have seen everything in this meaningless life, including the death of good young people and the long life of wicked people.

Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be beaten with a rod.

The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent.
