I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;

I went past the field of someone who didn’t want to work. I went past the vineyard of someone who didn’t have any sense.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,

I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense.

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of one lacking sense.

I passed by the field of a lazy one, And by the vineyard of a person lacking sense,

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.

I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding:

Even as I have seen, Those who plow iniquity And sow trouble reap the same.

“ I will tell you, hear me; What I have seen I will declare,

Behold, this we have searched out; It is true. Hear it, and know for yourself.”

All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.Then I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of holiness, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity.Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul.

I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.

Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise,Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler,Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest.How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep—So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.A worthless person, a wicked man, Walks with a perverse mouth;He winks with his eyes, He shuffles his feet, He points with his fingers;Perversity is in his heart, He devises evil continually, He sows discord.Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil,A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun: And look! The tears of the oppressed, But they have no comforter— On the side of their oppressors there is power, But they have no comforter.Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead, More than the living who are still alive.Yet, better than both is he who has never existed, Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.The fool folds his hands And consumes his own flesh.Better a handful with quietness Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks,“ For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.

He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding.

I have seen everything in my days of vanity: There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, And there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness.

Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.

The righteous see it and rejoice, And all iniquity stops its mouth.
