I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;

I went past the field of someone who didn’t want to work. I went past the vineyard of someone who didn’t have any sense.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,

I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense.

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of one lacking sense.

I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.

I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding:

According to what I have seen, those who plow wrongdoing And those who sow trouble harvest it.

“ I will tell you, listen to me; And what I have seen I will also declare;

Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is. Hear it, and know for yourself.”

All this I have seen, and have applied my mind to every deed that has been done under the sun at a time when one person has exercised authority over another person to his detriment.So then, I have seen the wicked buried, those who used to go in and out of the holy place, and they are soon forgotten in the city where they did such things. This too is futility.Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed quickly, therefore the hearts of the sons of mankind among them are fully given to do evil.

One who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; He who would destroy himself commits it.

I have been young and now I am old, Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken Or his descendants begging for bread.

Go to the ant, you lazy one, Observe its ways and be wise,Which, having no chief, Officer, or ruler,Prepares its food in the summer And gathers its provision in the harvest.How long will you lie down, you lazy one? When will you arise from your sleep?“ A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest,”Then your poverty will come in like a drifter, And your need like an armed man.A worthless person, a wicked man, Is one who walks with a perverse mouth,Who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, Who points with his fingers;Who, with perversion in his heart, continually devises evil, Who spreads strife.Therefore his disaster will come suddenly; Instantly he will be broken and there will be no healing.There are six things that the Lord hates, Seven that are an abomination to Him:Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil,A false witness who declares lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.

Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold, I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and power was on the side of their oppressors, but they had no one to comfort them.So I congratulated the dead who are already dead, more than the living who are still living.But better off than both of them is the one who has never existed, who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun.I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a person and his neighbor. This too is futility and striving after wind.The fool folds his hands and consumes his own flesh.One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind.Then I looked again at futility under the sun.There was a man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches, and he never asked,“ And for whom do I labor and deprive myself of pleasure?” This too is futility, and it is an unhappy task.

One who works his land will have plenty of bread, But one who pursues worthless things lacks sense.

I have seen everything during my lifetime of futility; there is a righteous person who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked person who prolongs his life in his wickedness.

On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found, But a rod is for the back of him who has no sense.

The upright see it and are glad; But all injustice shuts its mouth.
