The poor man uses entreaties, But the rich answers roughly.

Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;

He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches, And he who gives to the rich, will surely come to poverty.

But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

There were also those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”

He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.

A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying,“ Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!

And it shall be: As with the people, so with the priest; As with the servant, so with his master; As with the maid, so with her mistress; As with the buyer, so with the seller; As with the lender, so with the borrower; As with the creditor, so with the debtor.

Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.
