Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance.

Plans are made by asking for guidance. So if you go to war, get good advice.

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying,“ Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?”And the Lord said,“ Judah shall go up. Indeed I have delivered the land into his hand.”

Then the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God to inquire of God. They said,“ Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin?” The Lord said,“ Judah first!”

Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

Then Abner called to Joab and said,“ Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that it will be bitter in the latter end? How long will it be then until you tell the people to return from pursuing their brethren?”And Joab said,“ As God lives, unless you had spoken, surely then by morning all the people would have given up pursuing their brethren.”

Look! All of you are children of Israel; give your advice and counsel here and now!”

Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying,“ Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?” And the Lord said,“ Go up against him.”

If only this people were under my authority! Then I would remove Abimelech.” So he said to Abimelech,“ Increase your army and come out!”

Then all the children of Israel, that is, all the people, went up and came to the house of God and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord( the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying,“ Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?” And the Lord said,“ Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”

Do not go hastily to court; For what will you do in the end, When your neighbor has put you to shame?

Now Amaziah king of Judah asked advice and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying,“ Come, let us face one another in battle.”And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying,“ The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying,‘ Give your daughter to my son as wife’; and a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.Indeed you say that you have defeated the Edomites, and your heart is lifted up to boast. Stay at home now; why should you meddle with trouble, that you should fall— you and Judah with you?”But Amaziah would not heed, for it came from God, that He might give them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought the gods of Edom.So Joash king of Israel went out; and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah.And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent.Then Joash the king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth Shemesh; and he brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate— four hundred cubits.
