And David said,“ Mephibosheth!” And he answered,“ Behold, I am your servant.”And David said to him,“ Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.”And he paid homage and said,“ What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?”Then the king called Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him,“ All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s grandson.And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master’s grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.Then Ziba said to the king,“ According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table, like one of the king’s sons.And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all who lived in Ziba’s house became Mephibosheth’s servants.So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king’s table. Now he was lame in both his feet.

Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or what he drinks? Can I still listen to the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?Your servant will go a little way over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him go over with my lord the king, and do for him whatever seems good to you.”And the king answered,“ Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do for him whatever seems good to you, and all that you desire of me I will do for you.”Then all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over. And the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his own home.

All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king.And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them.And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim,brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans and lentils,honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat, for they said,“ The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.”
